Jason Birch has been dedicated to the study of Sanskrit and the practice of Yoga since 1995. His knowledge of Yoga is a combination of what he has learned from practising modern Hatha Yoga, Chi Gung and Zen, as well as his academic research into the Hatha Yoga tradition.

The style of Yoga Jason has developed is based on the five limbs of Hatha Yoga; kriyas, asanas, pranayama, mudras and meditation. The emphasis is on applying the mudras particular to Hatha Yoga, to change the breath and build vitality. Every part of the body is important in this, however, the eyes, tongue, throat, heart, navel, pelvic floor, hands, big toes and the spine are given special attention. The first four limbs are performed in such a way as to support a meditation practice, which begins with mindfulness of breathing and moves towards absorption in the heart cakra.

Jasonfs strength lies in his ability to combine an academic and practical knowledge of Yoga to explain and demonstrate the rejuvenating practices of this ancient art. Owing to the influence of the Western sciences, modern Yoga is evolving into something quite different to its Indian ancestor, and Jason hopes to continue to contribute to its development through his research and teaching at both Universities and Yoga schools around the world.

Hatha Yoga: An Integrated Practice
Saturdays & Sundays, August 2008

If you desire abundant vitality and the strength to embrace all that life may offer, the practice of Hatha Yoga is a priceless jewel, for it teaches us that the mind and spirit can be shaped by directly shaping the body. The connections are irrefutable; physical stillness is mental equipoise; strength is courage and lightness is joy. This workshop aims to present the full scope of Hatha Yoga, as described in the ancient texts, laying the foundations with cleansing practices (kriyas) and postures (asana), and deepening the experience by introducing breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana). The material will culminate to form a complete practice, which may be varied according to individual needs and circumstances, to bring about profound transformation.

This module will include an overview of the 6 cleansing practices as described in the main Hatha Yoga Texts; a demonstration of Jala Neti, Sutra Neti and Danda Dhauti; and step-by-step instruction on the practice of Trataka, Kapalabhati and Nauli (with many variations). Traditionally, the Kriyas were taught before Asanas, to those who suffered excessive phlegm (i.e. Kapha imbalances) and fat. The Kriyas are particularly useful for certain sinus, throat, eye, stomach, lung and digestive tract problems. They make the body shine from within!

The second session will integrate dynamic Kriyas and the heating Pranayama of Bhastrika (bellows breath) and Khumbhakas (breath retentions).
