Edward Clark began studying yoga in 1979. He is the creator of Tripsichore yoga Theatre, and noteworthy among his teachers are Narayani and Giris Rabinovitch, but he confesses huge admiration for the Ashtanga Vinyasa, Sivananda, Iyengar and Viniyoga practices. He fuses his keen artistic vision with a deep understanding of the essential pursuit of yoga practice. With one foot in dance, one foot in Ashtanga and Sivananda he has synthesized the use of breath, asana, choreography and philosophy. His teachings are entertaining, demanding and exhilarating.

Tripsichore began in 1979 as a company devoted to creating full length dance narratives. The Company explored a variety of stylistic forms including punk ballet, conventional modern dance and strict neo-classical technique. They used masks, performed with rock bands and did pop videos. While yoga was always a part of their training, it wasn't until 1992 that they realised the expressive potential and choreographic viability of yoga postures. Once they began to devise works using yoga asanas, their extraordinary artistic logic became evident. Surprisingly, it would seem that there has been no orthodox tradition for using yoga technique to create dances in the 5000 year history of the discipline. The postures intrinsically possess a sumptuous beauty and fluidity. The postures are the ideal vehicle to express the themes of harmony, balance, spirituality, ecstasy, bliss and mysticism because they are exactlyabout these subjects in and of themselves. They are now 14 years into this experiment and each day brings new discoveries.

Tripsichore Choreographic Workshops in Tokyo: FINDING THE BEAUTY IN POSTURES
Tuesday 11th March - Thursday 13th March 2008

The philosopher Ananda Coomaraswamy makes the fascinating claim that beauty is a latent phase of Brahman -- something that comes out of latency and into being when it is experienced by a practitioner or observer. Yoga practice has the exulted aim of trying to come to an understanding of Brahman and it is inevitable that, on occasion, we see someone in an asana or we do a posture and have this experience of Beauty or Brahman.

Tripsichore creates works that fuse the lyricism of dance with the spirituality of yoga. The technique focuses on uniting the mind and body through the use of breath and the movement of energy. Tripsichorefs linking of postures is innovative, yet the methods used are respectful of orthodox traditions. The goal of this workshop is to understand the beauty and energy of some of the more spectacular postures and to explore their expressive potential.

The practice of Tripsichore techniques is for anyone interested in expanding the potential of yoga. Some previous yoga experience is recommended because we do work with advanced asanas, although those fairly new to yoga will find the workshop safe, accessible, and entertaining. We analyze technical approaches to breathing, backbends, and inverted work, all with the aim of explaining and exploring how energy flows through the body to create the forms and shapes. Then, we focus on the expressive potential of advanced backbends, Tripsichore Sun Salutations, and inverted postures that we learn to transform into the choreography of Tripsichore Yoga Theatre.
